The Name You Know and Trust!

Since 2001, SafeStaff® has been the approved and contracted provider for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation Division of Hotels and Restaurants. We have now partnered with ServSafe to continue to serve you. Since that time, Florida has seen a decrease in the instances of food borne illness cases in our State proving that foodhandler training really works!

What's required?

Since 1997, the State of Florida has mandated that all food service workers be trained in food safety. The SafeStaff® Foodhandler Training Program is the contracted program of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) and contains the following six mandated key food safety principles:

Ensuring proper personal hygiene
Preventing cross-contamination
Controlling time and temperature when handling food
Proper cleaning and sanitizing
The causes and effects of major foodborne illnesses
Ensuring proper vermin control

Florida requires all food service employees in a licensed DBPR establishment to be trained on correct food handling and hygiene practices. Only DBPR division-approved training programs are accepted as meeting the training requirement.

DBPR enacted the current Food Employee Training requirements in 2001. Click here to see a copy of the Florida Statutes. For more information view our Foodhandler FAQs.

SafeStaff® Employee Foodhandler Program is DBPR’s contracted provider for employee food safety training. Is the Foodhander program you are using valid in Florida? Ask your vendor for their DBPR Approved Provider Number and validate it to their approved provider list. Here's the law that requires DBPR food service employee Foodhandler training.

Effective August 1, 2011, DBPR has approved the SafeStaff® Employee Foodhandler Online Training Program. In an effort to stay current with alternative and effective methods of employee training, SafeStaff® the DBPR Contracted provider, is now offering the convenience and flexibility of online training.

Choosing a program...

When selecting a training vendor be sure to:
Get it in writing - know what you are paying for and have a complete understanding of the services and products you are ordering.
Get the company name, the contact name and phone number when you call - you'll be grateful to have a name and contact who'll be there the next time you have questions about anything relating to the hospitality industry.
Check with the Better Business Bureau - especially when selecting someone you do not know - we frequently receive call from folks who did business with a new vendor and paid up front only to find out their class was canceled or they never received the materials they ordered and now no one is answering the phone or returning voicemails.
Understand your discounts - Are you an FRLA member and do you qualify for a membership discount on the products you are buying? When you log in your membership discounts are automatically applied to your order. If you do not currently have an individual account with us, no problem! When creating your account, select your member company from the drop down list and the rest is automatic.
Consider your commitment to food safety - purchasing a book for each employee and holding a food safety training class may cost a little in time and money, but pays off much higher dividends when it results in your employees being properly trained and having the knowledge and skills to prevent foodborne illness in your operation. Your time and money is valuable, use and invest it wisely.
Read the Instructions - There are instructions for administering the SafeStaff® Employee Foodhandler Program in every book. Read and follow them carefully. In order for your employees to be recorded in the DBPR online Foodhandler database, you must return a completed bubble form for each trained individual to us via traceable mail. Inspectors frequently use this database during inspections to verify training. Check your company's training records in the DBPR online Foodhandler database.
